BWISC Bulletin No 8 - January 1956

HONORARY SECRETARY'S PARAGRAPH and MEMBERSHIP

I feel I may be forgiven in anticipating the approval of all members in presenting our Bulletin in its new form. For some time past I have wondered it would ever be possible to go to print and preliminary enquiries led me to hope that something might be done later in the year. That it has been found practicable to commence the New Year in the new format is due to three factors: a steadily increasing membership, an acceptable quotation from our printers, and lastly (but by no means least) the generous support of our advertisers, some of whom are also members of our CIRCLE. I am aware that they can offer some very interesting material and I shall be glad if Members, when making enquiries of them, will always mention the Bulletin. Turning to our Autumn meeting there is only one thing to add to what you have already read, and that is my personal thanks to all those who attended and brought such interesting material for everyone to enjoy. With regard to the Exhibition which is being sponsored by the Junior Philatelic Society and the Philatelic Traders' Society under the title "STAMPEX", no doubt there are some members who are wondering why our CIRCLE'S exhibit is confined to two colonies. The reason is simple and I feel will be readily understood. Following last year's Exhibition it was the considered opinion of the organisers that our display, in endeavouring to cover so many colonies, was somewhat 'bitty'. Quite frankly, I was in entire agreement, and with only two frames (18 pages) the position could not be otherwise. Those of you who are able to at end this year will, I am sure, find the pages of ST. LUCIA and TRINIDAD very interesting. In the event of our CIRCLE being invited on another occasion, two different colonies will be selected. Finally, I would like to make an urgent appeal to all those who contemplate attending our second Anniversary Dinner on Friday, January 27th to let me know how many tickets they require without delay. Our principal guest will be Mr. W. Ewart Gerrish O.B.E., a Vice-President of the Royal Philatelic Society, London, and as there is accommodation for up to 100, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to have a 'full house'.

MEMBERSHIP.

DEAR MEMBER,

We hope you spent an enjoyable Christmas and was able to look back on an interesting year with your stamps and that some of the items you needed to fill the inevitable blank spaces came your way. In wishing you a HAPPY NEW YEAR we trust it will prove to be full of interest and that you will make many more new friends. In our view, friends that we make in the pursuit of our hobby, whether at a meeting of a local society or through the medium of correspondence, remain so throughout our lives. It is our hope that you have found a number of items in our pages that have interested you and maybe, in some instances, clarified some point upon which you have been in some doubt. A number of members who specialise in CAYMAN ISLANDS wrote in concerning the article on one of the pre-adhesives discovered by our Founder, and this provides just one example of the usefulness of our CIRCLE.

MEMBERSHIP: It is with pleasure we report a further increase in our membership which now totals 131. We welcome the following newcomers from overseas: F. J. Freeman and R. H. Larkin (Canada), D. H. Kerr and W. Redford, F.R.P.S.L. (South Africa). J. C. Churchill and F. B. Jancowski (U.S.A.). We are also glad to include Dorset and Gloucestershire for the first time in our table of distribution.
