BERMUDA

'3' Mark

"I recently acquired a copy of S.G.16, 1d on 3d yellow-buff with the usual smudgy cancellation and in addition the greater part of a large, single-lined "3", clearly struck. The upper lobe is 11 mm. wide and the complete figure is about 21 mm. in height. The size and rounded shape of this "3" are suggestive of an accounting mark but I have never seen one before on a Bermuda stamp or cover. I would welcome suggestions as to what it is and how it comes about on a 1d stamp.
